Each network card (wired or wirelss) has a unique ID called a MAC address. This is a number that consists of 6 groups of numbers which range from 0-f. For example 00-08-74-EA-68-7C. Your computer stores a list that maps IP addresses to MAC addresses. This list is called an ARP cache.
