What I am wanting to do is go from my house to my cousins house which is approximately 1/2 a mile away give or take. One thought I had was to get a normal router with a 1 mile max radius...but do they make them? Another problem for me is that there is NO straight shot from one house to the next. We live in east texas where the pine trees are 150' tall at least...so getting above them is going to be impossible. Help me out guys!!!!

Don't expect to pick this stuff up at a Best Buy or Circuit City. There are websites where you can order special components like this that will travel great distances via wifi. They would require a high powered antenna at both yours and your cousin's house. There are also some sites that explain how to build an antenna on your own. You will probably need to mount this antenna on the outside of your house.

You may also want to look in to the WiMax standard. This is supposed to provide you with components that will allow you to send a wireless signal this far and beyond.

I can tell you right now, you are not going to get a wireless signal through pine trees with any normal or range boost router. I work with very sophisticated fixed wireless Motorola equipment and given that there is no line of site and 150' pine trees in your situation, I don't even think our equipment can handle that. Sorry dude.

I remember seeing a special on tech tv before G4 bought them where they did some special antennas that gave this kind of range - but if i remember, there were no big trees in between. Check the below link.

If you do manage to get this up and running, then make sure you make your connection highly encrypted because it'll be a war-drivers heaven if they notice the connection. Don't know if Texas has War-drivers or not LoL
