good luck, i went there july 01 and it was a mad house, people were sleeping on the streets. i have never seen anything like it. we had to cram 6 people into 1 room with 2 twin beds for 2 nights. if i recall the bus ride from madrid, there wasn't much out there on the way to pamplona but fields.

Bilbao is pretty close to Pampalona however, during the festival the hotels in this area become quite expensive. Bilbao is in a different province all together, almost like a different state but it does not take that long to drive across Spain at all. It took us an hour once to drive from Madrid to Toledo. Another place you could try is Vitoria or San Sebastian. Pampalona is the capital of the province Navarra so you can search by the Province name and come up with other cities close. Those are the major cities that I know but hope this helps! The Fiesta of San Fermin is a BLAST!!!

The festival of San Fermin is by far the best known event taking place in Pamplona. TV viewers from all over the world are surprised, impressed or shocked each year when they watch the spectacle of bulls running through the streets of the town and hundreds of young men, usually dressed in traditional white shirts and red belts, ahead of them. I'm thinking of going, let me know of any information you get. I'm not researching it right now, have too much on my plate right now to worry about.

Carnivale in Venice
St. Paddys Day in Ireland
Tulips blooming in Netherlands
....
This may be my last year in Europe and I intend to enjoy it and go to as many events as I can...
