AWD is on all the time, and allows more slip between the speed of the left and right front wheels.

4WD has limited slip on the front axle, which can cause serious problems on dry pavement if you're turning the wheel; because the inside wheel needs to go slower then the outside one. It works great in dirt and snow, making the vehicle "claw" through whatever. 4WD is something you have to switch into, with locking hubs on the front. Good 4WD systems don't make you get out and manualy lock the hubs.

Nothing unless your car has six wheels. I've seen cars with AWD badges that normally work as front wheel drive unless you flip a switch, and vehicles labeled 4WD that send power to all wheels at all times (and vice versa). I suspect that which one a car is labeled depends on which one the company's graphic desigerns thought would look better in a logo.

AWD drive is a full time system. All wheels have power all the time. 4WD can be turned off and on, meaning you can shift from 2WD to 4WD and usually 4WD high or low.
