dont use sugar cubes--bad idea. i tried that, it does not work nearly as well as one might think

try styrofoam or something similiar.
or you can just create the effect of stone yourself by using a sponge-type brush..or a small piece opf a sponge! just dip it in the gray paint (or whatever color you use) and blotch it ALL around the cardboard , (or buy white foam board...its thick and works GREAT for brining out the color) and itll give it that stoney-cement look

I would also use clay and then some blue play-dough for around the bottom to make it look surrounded by water...you could use the sugar cubes around the top to make the castle look of the stones...

We did one made out of graham crackers one year. Hold them together with icing- like a gingerbread house. pretzel sticks can be chains and cut flags from fruit roll ups. Colored candies (like M & Ms or Red Hots) can be used for decoration. If you can find the blue plastic wrap, it makes really good "water" when put around the base.

It depends on how envolved you want it to be

use cardboard, adding rolls from toilet paper or towels as fortress Real easy use a shoe box and cut a draw bridge and windows. I once built one of sugar cubes alternating each row and leaving holes for window s spray paint it grey .

this is a diagram and a photo.

legos? play-doh bricks? clay bricks? tin cans? (be careful with the tin snips) that styrofoam you use for packing anf mailing? plastic bottles covered in construction paper? i guess i'd take the diagram and use a combination of all of these. good luck to your KING!

Try painting sugar cubes gray, and gluing them together They will look grainy and uneven, like stone.
