As much as it pains me to present this opinion, no, America is not mirroring the Roman empire. The key thing here is the root cause of the Roman empire's expansion versus the American desire to set the world, in their view, straight.
The expansion and ultimate collapse of the Roman empire was largely due to the need for materiel and food: as more people entered Rome more was needed to support the consumption that grew - the apetite for everything overran the ability of the existing territory to support. So conquest was needed. Once a conquered people were under the dominion of Rome, they were to pay ever increasing tribute to the Roman state by way of taxes. The Roman Legions collected (or at least enforced the collection of) these tributes. As long as the Legions were strong, the taxes flowed in. But once the ranks of the Legions were weakened by attrition of true native Romans, and populated more and more with formerly conquered peoples, their ability to enforce collection diminished.
Meanwhile the Romans living in Rome were increasingly indolent and unproductive: arable land was let go fallow and productivity dwindled to non-existent while in the same cycle the need for food and resources continued to grow unabated. However, without the effective taxation arm to provide for these needs, the Empire withered and died.
America is not aimed down this road. There will always be tax collectors and enforcers in sufficient supply to meet the needs of the indolent class. The ultimate cause of the collapse of the Roman Empire (after some 700 years!!!) was that it became too entrenched in it's own history - something the MTV generation will never have to deal with. Glorifying and Deifying heroes of the past lead to a presumption of personal glory and deity in the leaders of the Roman republic: as witnessed by the Clinton and Bush scandals and personal attacks launched daily, they will NEVER be mistaken for gods among men - either by the publc, or by themslves.
No, the American Empire is safe for now, especially with the external targets of hostility that have kindly presented themselves as mass distractions to the country's internal problems.
This, of course, is my own opinion.

i imagine that the parrals a scary. Rome become rotted from the interior lengthy in the previous the basically accurate cave in. u . s . of america has been rotting for a lengthy time period. Our values has been trumpted by way of what the religious accurate says is sweet and ultimately when you say we are no longer an empire, what precisely become the diverse from what Rome did the country that we now call England to what we've carried out to Vietnam and the middle East (besides dropping or have already lost). i'm particular that in case you visit different international places both than u . s . of america, human beings will call us an Empire.

It is ironic that I stumbled across this question. I just studied the similarities between the Roman Empire and the United states today in my History Seminar class and there are a lot of similarities. More than I expected. You would think people would learn from history and not repeat it.

I agree, but that is inevitable, cause this world will end eventually, but i think the downfall of america will be the moral degradation of society as a whole and the youth who will soon take over the nation, generation from generation we have seen that the times get more evil than ever, plus the nuclear thing, i agree for america wanting everyone to disarm but shouldn't they disarm too

America is a bully right now, with the bush admin, corporations in control through lobbyists. America has already ran off the cliff and will soon come tumbling to near poverty.... I see it as the greed of the upper class and the simpleminded apathy of the middle and lower class that has done this,,,,,,
I gather rome fell because it consisted of mostly slaves... and had no interest in fighting for it's survival...
