Well DDR works in mysterious ways. Keep at it and one day you will be bad, not able to do standard. The next you will wake up try it and mysteriously be able to do some standard songs.
Same with heavy, except more practising. The best term for it, is it just "clicks."
That is the way most beat and rhythm based games seem to work.
So just practise, practise, practise. It takes people anywhere between 3 and 6 months to become a proficient heavy player.
Oh and if you ever have trouble with some of the speeds of the songs. Hold down whatever button it is to select (A on Xbox, X on PS2 I think) and set the speed for X2. Really helps sometimes.
Oh and one last thing. CONSOLE DDR IS NOT ARCADE DDR.
The arcade settings of DDR are much harder (as you will notice if you ever try arcade). This is partially due to the force it requires to hit the step and the strict judging the machine does on the step itself. SO IF YOU HAVE THE CHANCE TO PRACTICE ON AN ARCADE MACHINE, DO SO.
__________
P.S. You might consider downloading Stepmania. Which is a PC version of DDR where you download songs on your own. You can use a connector and hook up the pad to your PC. Or test your skills using your hands. All is good practice when it comes to DDR.

Usually the best DDR players have had some background in music. DDR is all about rythym and timing. If you don't have a good sense of rythym you can't be good at DDR.
Practicing over and over is obviously the best method to get better. Once you reach higher levels of gameplay, you will need to learn different techniques to become good. Not returning the the center of the mat and sidestepping are two good techniques the pros use to not get tired as fast.
Training mode is a big help if a song is too fast or you're having trouble with the rythym. You can slow down the speed of the song and have a metronome ticking in the backround to help you keep the beat.
For most people DDR takes weeks and even months to become great. All you have to do is keep pushing it. Just think about how sweet it will be once you finally start nailing the really hard songs.
Good Luck and don't give up!

Start from 1 footers and work up gradually to 10-footers.
Move up when you get a B on a song from that level.
Also get DDR Extreme 2 not Supernova (Or DDRMAX, DDRMAX2, or DDR Extreme basically anything but Supernova because it's the worst ddr ps2 game ever)

Practice, Practice, Practice
download the music and listen to it whenever you can, this way you can memorize the beats, then get the step charts and use those to practice with. I like to listen to my mp3 player and read the step charts together so that i can try to memorize the steps. you don't necessarily have to memorize them but just get a feel for them and remember them. But listening to the music is really good because you can get the rythm and beats, and thats the whole trick to DDR, plus sight reading, try reading those step charts as fast as you can. try this also: turn the fail off in the game then play the song that you want, but dont try to play it, just let it run and look at the arrows, listen to the music, and try to visualize your feet stepping to each of those arrows, do this repeatedly until you feel comfortorable with it, then try it!
good luck

The only way to PWN at DDR is to feel the dancepad and become one with it. Then you look at the screen, wait 5 minutes, then you start one song. When you see the arrows flying past dont dance the first time just watch them go past and study them. Then once you think your ready then start then you go, but dont hurt yourself.
I hope this helps

Rather than always comming back to the center like it suggests, stay on the last spots you hit. The game tends to make it so you aren't accually jumping across the mat, but working your way around

The only sure way to get better is to play as often as you can. Start off easy and force yourself to work up to harder songs gradually!
