They are caused by the gravitational pull of the moon. The earths oceans always bulge out wherever the moon is overhead. Since the moon does not stay in the same place in relation to our sky, it is constantly causing tidal waves as the gravitational pull moves around the oceans.
Extra: Earthquakes have nothing to do with tidal waves. http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?sourceid=Mozilla-search&va=tidal

Tidal wave is common term for tsunami used in older literature, historical descriptions, and popular accounts. Tides, caused by the gravitational attractions of the sun and moon, may increase or decrease the impact of a tsunami, but have nothing to do with their generation or propagation. However, most tsunamis (initially) give the appearance of a fast-rising tide or fast-ebbing as they approach shore and only rarely as a near-vertical wall of water.

I think your dreams are very interesting. I do not believe that tidal waves symbolise anything, but in both your dreams your environment is very much out of control. Have you got a personal situation that is out of control in any way? A problem that you cannot manage that is getting too much? This is only a suggestion, you may find it means something else. Email me if you would like to discuss it further.

Underwater subduction earthquakes, Landslides (either underwater or above), and impact events. When an oceanic plate and a continental plate meet stress builds until one plate gives way usually bulging upwards. This could be 500 miles of sea floor popping 10 to 20 ft up all at once. Landslides caused by severe earthquakes or volcanic eruption/explosion also produce tsunami's.
