I was taught that it is impolite not to look at the speaker when they are speaking. Looking at the speaker's eyes can be intimidating because it can show a lot of reactions to you and sometimes it can feel like they are judging you on how well you are listening to them or anaylzing you.
Looking at the forehead or chin is out of the question since that would be just weird. Looking at the nose is too close to the eyes. But if you look at their mouth, it's kind of acknowledging that you are listening to them because that is where the sound comes from. Of course, you could be just staring at that food crumb/stain left on the corner of their mouth from lunch. It's better than nothing.

You might start to be able to do it by practicing. Kids are easy to practice on. Elderly people are usually very friendly. What I think is going on is that you have a lack of confidence; and you feel people won't like you. Well, guess what? You're wrong! You're not giving them a chance to know you. I'd find somebody who will help you realize what a fantastic person you are! Like a counselor perhaps.. You can also look in a mirror- into your own eyes, and TALK! Don't give up!

Looking at the eyes is what judge Judy always wants, the mouth and the face is ok, once you face the person squarely so they cant look down when lying.

I do. I have seasonal hearing loss due to allergies. I didn't realize I was reading lips as people talk until I couldn't understand actors in movies, and on TV taking with their backs to the camera, and my boyfriend talking with his hand in front of his mouth.
I do try to make eye contact as much as possible.

I do it sometimes but it depends on the severity of the conversation. If it is a serious conversation, I make an effort to make eye contact. It also depends on who I am talking with. If it a superior at work, I make eye contact to show assertiveness.

Have you ever thought, how would the other person think?.. It's uncomfortable feeling for them if you look at a person's mouth. I guess. That's how i feel.

I only look at their eyes. If you look anywhere else the person might think you are looking for somethong wrong with them or you are a gutless wimp if you look at the ground. If **** could talk they would be comforting to talk to.
