I know the ages in the US are different as well (21 and 18 respectively) but is there a reason that one needs to be older to smoke or at least purchase cig. in Canada?

The age of majority varies from province to province. In BC, the drinking and smoking age is 19, while Alberta it is 18.

One of the main reasons for the drinking age in the US being 21 while smoking 18 is because of the overly high number of drinking and driving offences committed by younger drivers. Another reason it could be different is the timing of the age limits. The age limits for tobacco are relatively recent as compared to the alcohol limits, and the perception for when one is old enough to make an informed decision could have changed over time.

Because the alcohol industry has more money to fight it with. I know smoking is bad and affects others ( I am a smoker) But so does alcohol. I never heard of anyone smoking a pack of cigarettes and then killing someone in a car accident. Also with alcoholism causing illness ( liver disease, Heat problems, and so on) There are still allowed to advertise on television when the tobacco Co's are not. They say it is because young kids get the idea that smoking is "cool" and they become smokers. But then they allow alcohol commercials and don't seem to think it sends the same message to kids...Hmmm something is wrong with this!

reasons why that is 21 is because of the fact your ideas does not totally advance till your 20. So while they are asserting it;s 21, that is only because of the fact they don't opt for to break you. and that i've got surely no clue why that is 19 in Canada. it is distinctly youthful.

19 for both in my province anyway. Young people are always talking about getting their liquor ID at 19.

It is 19 in Ontario for both as far as I am aware. Who knows what those crazy Quebecers do, nobody understands them anyway with their French and all.

Maybe they view cigarettes as a more dangerous product. They just decided to be different.
