The way our species validates and relentlessly pursues the philosophical idea of zero-sum gain (which means that in order for me to win something, you have to lose, or vice versa). I think it creates many if not all of the weakensses and sorrows we as humans have. What distinguishes us from lower life forms is that we, unlike other animals, have the capability to recognize that there are alternative ways than this of dealing with one another, just as we are also aware that we have the capability to overcome the first instinct that we might feel. Being a creature of Earth might bring out our lower instincts (fears that make us all feel lacking, which lead to envy, greed and the rest of the "deadly sins") but we are more powerful than animals who mindlessly destroy one another to survive, because we are ingenious creatures who can and do choose alternatives to the "eat-or-be-eaten" mentality. I wish we chose it more often. It truly ennobles us and brings out the true meaning of the word "human."
