Few things - ( www.historychannel.com) they just did a series about it Building an Empire i think.

But i digress - top 5 things they did right:
Had ONE greatly disiplined army
had excellent civil and war engineers
had for its time the cleanest enviroments in its cities
had leaders who were bold enough to move and wise enough to stop.
Understood happy peasents means more production.

They had lasers and jet packs. I think they got them from the Cylons.

That and they were frighteningly charming before converting to Islam. Then they lost their collective sense of humor.
