Advent children was actually a follow-up to the game Final Fantasy VII.
There are currently 12 main series games, and 8 or so spin-offs.
There's also a feature film called "Final Fantasy The Spirits Within", 2 videos called "Final Fantasy Legend of the Crystals", and a 26-episode anime called "Final Fantasy Unlimited"

The final fantasy games inherit the playing style of its predecessors at times but each game is a complete rework of its storyline and style so that none of the games are actually related. In other words in each of the main final fantasy games it's always a completely different world and story so it's not like Bowser kidnapping Princess Peach for the umteenth time.
Advent Children is a movie sequel to FFVII and not a game and it takes place 1 year after the events of the game. Off the top of my head:
FF1 - Mother of the series released on the NES and remade on the Playstation. Also re-released on the GBA with all new subquests and features.
FF2 - One of the dark sheep of the series released on the NES and remade on the Playstation. Also re-released on the GBA with all new subquests and features. Frustrating 'level' up hurts it's value.
FF3 - Only released in Japan (although a fan translation for emulator exists) until it was completely remade from scratch for the DS. The first that contains the job system.
FF4 - Final Fantasy 2 in America. Released for SNES and released with all new features for the GBA. Heavy emphasis of story.
FF5 - Initially released in Japan. Released with all new features for the GBA. Updated Job system.
FF6 - Final Fantasy 3 in America. Released for SNES and will be released with all new features for the GBA inthe US in Feb. A heavy favorite among fans.
FF7 - First playstation title. Advant Children was the movie that sums up the events of the game 1 year later for most of the cast except vincent. Dirge of the Ceberus is a separate game that takes place 2 years after the events of VII for the PS2 and Vincent is the main character. Crisis core is a separate game that is a prequel for the psp.
FF8 - Released for the PS. Commonly accepted as a black sheep due to it's difficult to understand story and the stock magic system.
FF9 - Released for the PS. Underrated in my opinion. Great storyline, fun sidequests (they just need to fix the trance-limit break).
FFX - 1st PS2 release. 1st FF to eliminate the world map perspective.
FFXI - PS2. Online only. Little central storyline figures in (depending how you play it).
FFXII - PS2 - No longer online the series began to inherit traits from the previous main series and it's spin offs. Eliminates the random battle screen and makes it completely dynamic. Also allows user to preprogram the party's actions as opposed to actually choosing the actions.
There are lots of spin offs: Mystic Quest (suppose to be FF for beginners) for SNES, Tactics and Tactics advance (a chess/ff hybrid game) and Crystal Chronicles which are not considered a part of the main series because they are not numbered.
There is also a movie called 'The Spirits Within' that doesn't follow the storyline of any of the games (and completely sucks).

What do you propose by using "episodes"? there's a game called disaster center for PSP, and there is an OVA that includes creation infants (constrained version in individual-friendly words) called very final Order. it particularly is rather plenty it for English releases. each and every ingredient else happens after Zack dies. Japan has previously disaster, in spite of if it particularly is under no circumstances been released foreign places.
