You "can" take one anytime you want. Most don't show a positive result until around when you would have your period if you are pregnant, though. Go ahead and take one. If it's positive, congrats....if not, take another one next week. Repeat until you have either a positive result or a period. If a month goes by with no period and no positive result, contact your health care provider for "official" advice.
And it depends what kind of birth control you were on as to when to expect the first period.

you can feel the effects of no bc for up to 3 months (if youdont take a different kind). Since it takes 1-2 months for the bc to actually work, it takes longer for it to get out of your system. Youre most likely not pregnant though. If you think that you might be, wait until the end of the month and take a test. chances are you didn't even ovulate yet so therefore, no baby.

Your PMS symptoms may be more prevalant when you stop the birth control pills. I know mine were and the symptoms could be mistaken as pregnancy because they are more pronounced.
Not to say the possibility of pregnancy isn't there because it is. Depending on how long your cycles were before taking birth control and how long you have been on them could also affect your cycle length.

I went off the pill last July and went 3 months without getting my period (and I wasn't pregnant). I ended up visiting my GYN and getting a pill to induce my period and another (clomid) to make me ovulate.

If your period was the "normal" 4 weeks before you went on the pill, I'd wait 5 weeks (from your last period), then get a home pregnancy test. If it's negative, you may want to wait a few more weeks, or you may want to talk to your doctor and see what she recommends.

what i would do is go down to your local dollar tree store were they sell those one dollar pregnancy test and buy a few of those and take one every day to check. Either youll get a possitive on one or youll start your pieriod. at least you wont waist a bunch of money on test.
