I'm not Irish, nor have I ever been to Ireland. So, I don't know that it's just them. I've taken many plane rides and I've witnessed people doing this many times. Usually when the pilot makes a good landing. You know... nice and smooth... not too bumpy.

It's not just the Irish. Every flight in or to Asia I've ever been on (and that's flights to/from Singapore, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Jakarta, Bangkok, etc) the same thing has happened. If I recall correctly it also happened when I went to Australia. No one was able to explain it to me other than to say that it was to let the flight crew know they enjoyed the flight. Thank you pilot for getting me to my destination alive? If that's the case, some of the flights I was on in Indonesia certainly warranted it...

It's not an Irish thing. I know a lot of people that do it mostly from the West Indies and America. They are thankful for the safe flight.

The Irish have a deep appreciation for life and a firm grasp of the fact that when you chuck a great big metal thing in the air, it's just as likely to fall down as not.
Or maybe they just like to see someone doing their job well and want to pat them on the back, especially when "doing their job well" = "not smearing a couple of hundred Irish across the tarmac."

I have not had that experience- I have been on several flights where people of all backgrounds and ethnicities have appluaded when the plane landed. My grandmother is not Irish but is terrified of flying and she cheers evertime her flights land safely.

Crazy drunk people!!! j/k
I guess they're more appreciative of surviving the ride. I feel like kissing my neighbour but feel I may get slapped.
