I came home one day to find that one of my three guppies was missing - being a biorb I thought it to be under the ceramic media - when I emptied it to check there was no fish - it had been eaten. Today I found that two guppies had attacked my fantail and caused it to half an hour die. I don't know why they have done this as they have been living peacefully together for about 5-6 months now. Thanks fir your help.

The guy in the pet shop recommended the guppies, along with minnows to start up the tank, before he would sell me the goldfish.

I know that the guppies did it, due to the fact that a memebr of my family happened to walk in two minutes before it died - the guppies were chassing the goldfish around the tank - I think it gave up in the end.

Guppies are typically not aggressive fish, so I am surprised that this happened. It is more likely that the fish died, and that the guppies were eating the carcass. Is that possible, or did you actually witness them killing the fish?
Anyway, fish can turn aggressive when they aren't kept properly, and this would classify as such. Goldfish are COLDwater fish, needing temps of 68-72F and 15 gallons of water per goldfish. Guppies, on the other hand, are warm water fish, needing a temp of 78-79F.
High ammonia levels can also cause aggression; test for ammonia and nitrites. Both should be a 0.

I'm not sure why this happened. The opposite happened in my tank. We bought 10 guppies, and now we only have 1 left because all the other guppies were eaten by our goldfish and our koi fish. The bigger fish also ate our 2 bumblebee gobis. I guess it is just really risky to put larger and smaller fish together.

Maybe your guppies felt the bigger fish was a threat so they ganged up on it to save themselves.

Maybe they're mating? The male might behave agressively towards other fish during this time.
