Sleeping on Your Back while Pregnant
Getting a good night sleep when you are pregnant can be tricky. With a big tummy and pressure everywhere, it is very hard to find a comfortable position. During the beginning stages of pregnancy, sleep position is not much of an issue. But, as the baby continues to grow, there are really only two positions that are safe for a pregnant woman to sleep: upright or on her side.
The problems with sleeping on your stomach are pretty obvious, but many are confused as to why they cannot sleep on their back. While it may seem comfy, the weight of your enlarged uterus can actually pose serious risk to you if you sleep on your back while pregnant. The pressure of the uterus on your diaphragm can interfere with your breathing. Another problem with sleeping on your back is that your uterus also puts a lot of pressure on your aorta, which is a major blood vessel.

It depends on how far along you are. If you have a big belly, the weight of the baby can push down on your spine and cause tremendous back pain. Sleeping on your left side brings more oxygen to the baby and allows blood flow to get to the legs and back to heart a lot better. If that's not comfortable, use a body pillow. Prop your leg upon it and also your belly. It helps to take the weight off of your hips and the muscles don't become so sore. Good luck to you.

During the second half of pregnancy, avoid sleeping on your back, a position that puts the full weight of your uterus on your spine, back muscles, intestines, and the inferior vena cava (the vein that transports blood from your lower body to the heart). Back-sleeping can also put you at risk for backaches and hemorrhoids, inefficient digestion, and impaired breathing and circulation. Lying on your back in the second and third trimester can also cause changes in blood pressure. For some women, it can cause a drop in blood pressure that can make them feel dizzy; for others, it can cause an unwanted increase in blood pressure.

You'll hear a lot of mixed responses on this one. Most people will say no. The best side and recommended side to sleep on is on your left side. It makes it much easier for the blood to circulate to your baby. Try as much as you can to either sleep on your left or right side. I'm a stomach sleeper and at almost 36 weeks, I start on my side and wake up leaning towards my stomach, but when I catch myself, I make sure I readjust.

I am 23 weeks and just read that you should avoid sleeping on your back and stomache, you need plenty of room and nothing pushing down or on your placenta. You need the best blood flow to it. I stik to sleeping on my sides and I used to sleep face down all the time!
Good luck!

My doctor told me that you can sleep on your back, but your back will get really sore. Also they say that there can be problems as you get further along. You probably want to ask your doctor to be sure.
Good Luck

My OBGYN told me that it isnt advisible after 16 weeks, my suggestion would be to get a body pillow and prop your leg up on it while sleeping.
