Laptops use LCD monitors, which use a fluorescent bulb down at the bottom of the screen - if you're lucky, the bulb burned out. But they usually last a LONG time. Sounds like the transistors in the LCD are working fine, able to block/allow light so that you can see the text.

look where screen hinge meets the laptop there is a little switch that pops up when the screen is opened - get a knife blade and press it a few times it may start to work
If not it will be expensive to fix and will generally not be worth it unles you have a newish laptop
good news .......
You can still sell it on ebay say that it is broken - techies will buy it to fix
You can keep it and just plug a normal computer monitor in the back - not so portable though !

the pixels/display remains on screen for a time after your monitor is turned off. Regardless of what kind of monitor for about five minutes afterwards you can see the picture so long as you look hard enough for it, due to the fact there is still power or an electrical current running through it.

Well you probably need a new LCD screen. Though on some of the older ones the FL inverter might have gone out. It would depend on which laptop you have. I think on most laptops now they are an entire assembly.
