I'm guessing you mean that your speed is supposed to be 5.5Mbps. This is 5.5 megaBITS per second, not megaBYTES per second. This means that a 5.5 megabits per second should give you about .6875 megabytes (.687MBps, notice the capital "B") per second maximum when you are downloading something. If you were downloading a file, then this must have been your throughput for that specific connection.

To see how fast your connection is, go to http://www.speedtest.net really late at night and run the test. This will tell you what your actual speeds are to your home.

First of all check all the connections between the phone and your PC ensure there is a filter on each device plugged in to your line, if possible move your router to the main socket and try that.

Once you have done this call your ISP, they will probably tell you to do all this anyway before doing anything so doing it first will save the cost and time of the initial call.

usually you many times get slightly extra or slightly much less, and many times it is going up and down counting on what server your downloading from and how plenty bandwidth is presently used. you may get 250KB/s on your 1mbps connection even nevertheless in case you particularly get purely 1mbps and not in any respect extra its no longer a hazard. I pay for a hundred/100mbps yet i'm getting approximately one hundred thirty/250mbps. So i'm getting 2.5 situations greater speed than i pay for (upload bandith) and purely slightly extra acquire then im procuring.

Same thing happened to me. You probably live in an apartment or area of high usage. I called my cable provider. They send out a technician to make sure it wasn't my computer. When they realized, the whole area was that slow, they credited me from the time I complained until it was fixed. They don't know its slow until you complain. Make the call WHEN ITS SLOW.

The best speed testing site I've seen so far (and believe me I've researched this quite a lot) is at http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest

Pick the server that's closest to you.

Are you on talktalk by any chance? They're notoriously slow at peak times.
