The plan would be to fly into LA weekly...the flight is just under an hour. Already we are paying at the top end of what we can afford housing wise...which is about 4000 for a 1600 sq ft house. we got get a NICE house in PHx, for a mortgage pymt of about 1200 a month....that is more than half less than what we pay.

I have not done the commute, but I have lived in both cities. And I have been in the situation of commuting by plane weekly. So from that point of view, I would have to say, are you crazy? Sure, the housing is cheaper, but the flights, and then hotels during the week when you are in LA. You won't be saving a dime. Then you will live out of a suitcase, and have to go through airport security and air travel nightmares on a weekly basis. Flying that often takes a toll on the body, it really does. There are so many better options that the one you are looking at.

If you're serious...

Pro: you might save a couple hundred a month in rent.

Con: As it is about a 5 hr drive and 3/4 tank of gas one-way just to get to Ontario, CA (the eastern outskirt of metro LA), you don't really save at all in any area...

If LA is too expensive but commuting is not a big deal, you could look to the San Bernadino/Riverside area which are a LOT closer than Phoenix!
