Vinegar and baking soda will get rid of the odor. I pour 1/2 cup baking soda into the disposal, then mix some vinegar (1/2 cup) in a bottle with a cup of water, turn the disposal on and quickly pour the vinegar mixture in; turn the disposal off quickly and let it set overnight.

Twice a year, pour one-half cup baking soda, followed by one-half cup white vinegar into disposal. Cover tightly with a plug or wet rag. Let the mixture sit for five minutes, and then flush with boiling water.

Sanitize the garbage disposal and sharpen its blades by grinding frozen cubes of vinegar (made in an ice cube tray) or citrus peels while flooding the disposal with boiling water.

You have plenty of citrus advice above but you also need to keep your disposer clean. I run some ice cubes a couple of times a week to clean the blades and anytime I have eggshells I toss those in for scouring and sharpening. Keep the disposer clean by making sure you run it completely empty and NEVER let stuff just sit in there. Run it often and completely and you won't have an odor problem.

Grinding up lemon works well. You could also freeze vinegar in an ice cube tray. Put the vinegar cubes in the drain and turn on the disposal. Vinegar is a great deodorizer.

Any citrus peel will give the drain a nice clean smell, but pull out the little rubber splash guard and clean it with hot soapy water. You'll be amazed how dirty and greasy it is.

Ravensgirl is right, but it works even better if you pour in a bunch of baking soda and then actually grind the lemon (without the seeds) in the disposal.

I always have oranges in my fridge and when I eat them I toss the peel in the garbage disposal. You don't have to waste the whole piece of fruit...just the peel will work just fine.

Don't squeeze lemon juice in there! It won't do anything! Throw three or four slices of lemons in there and turn on the system. Then throw in some ice cubes to sharpen the blades.

Not just lemon juice...cut up a real lemon and run it through about once a week. The rinds of the real lemon will help claen the blades and freshen the whole unit, just the juice will not do that.

Pour a box of baking soda down the drain and let it sit for a little while and then rinse.
