No won't hurt the engine or transmission but car won't crank and start unless you put it back in park first. The only thing it could hurt is if you got out and the car rolled into something or someone.

Years ago, when pollution controls first started being required on autos, they would often "diesel," (continue to sputter and cough) sometimes for minutes after turning the engine off. The easy cure was to leave the car in gear to reduce the engine speed while turning the key off.
As someone else mentioned, the only "bad" that can happen is if you forget to put it in park or apply the emergency brake, and let the car roll into something.
