Puzzles assist the brain until they become addictive. You know you're an addict when you tune everything else out and you begin to see the puzzle grid when sitting in boring meetings. At this point, the cognitive boost from working puzzles has ended and the problems of any addiction take over.

Anything cognatively challanging will help the brain. It may not necessarily make a huge difference if you are young because your brain cells aren't dying very quickly. When you are older, and brain cells are dying, it is beneficial to do puzzles like crosswords, to keep the brain cells active and prevent cell death.

Absolutely. Sudoku does the same. Since I stated doing these puzzles, I've worked out how to solve them using different, more logical techniques, which I have picked up over the months. I find I think more logically when I am doing them and in general day to day life.
Puzzles have been proven to prevent mental deline in old age!

Doing word exercises makes our brain work, forces it to remember word definitions and patterns. It gets it back into a pattern of operating and analysing letters. It keeps the mind active, so it is a good thing to do, especially as you get older.

yes because it will put the cognitive areas in your brain into use. its common sense. cuz its the same with hand-to-eye co-ordination.... the more you play a game the better you get at it... and your brain will know how to strike a ball or whatever.

Yes and in all honesty any games that deal with thinking skills help sharpen the mind. A number of other things help sharpen the mind as well.
