Actually science has a theory that alot of the planets (and our moon in fact) help protect the earth from particles coming through to hit us such as jupiter. It being a gassy mess of stuff and with such a high density keeps alot of the "Space Crap" from getting through to the sun (which means getting through to us also)
Heck our moon is covered in craters from millions of giant impacts over the centuries, some big are big enough that they could have destroyed all life on the planet millions of years ago if they hit the earth.
Shrug.. so many things we dont understand

Why does there have to be a "use"? That's like asking "what is the use of other forms of life in the universe"? They are all here because they are all here. NOT EVERYTHING HAS TO HAVE A PURPOSE TO BENEFIT MANKIND. We are not all that important in the hierarchy of the universe....we are a small planet rotating around an ordinary star in a "backwater" place in our solar system.

The main use they are currently being put is data into theories of planet formation. There are big selection effects---it is much easier to detect big planets near their stars, but after taking that into account, each planet discovered teaches us more about how planetary systems (including our own) are formed.

Perhaps, as a web of jewels, so to say, all matter and connecting forces are here for us to twang and jiggle like a harp someday.

There are brick factories there, and without them, we would never have invented the outside toilet.
