no.take your genuine disc and put it in the dvd rom and wait for the splash screen to appear, then click on exit
restart the p.c and upon restart press delete to enter set up and then go into bios settings and set your cd-rom as the first boot device, then save and exit set up
your p.c will restart and when prompted"press any key to boot from cd",this will start the windows xp installation and follow the on screen instructions, which will also include a chance to partition your hard drive, also your previous version of windows will be deleted when windows set up formats the hard drive in which ever file system you choose(n.t.f.s / fat32)
upon completion of windows xp installation you will need to activate your copy unlike the non-genuine version, this needs to be done within 30 days, but now you will receive all updates and also you can download internet explorer 7,media player 11 and windows defender
trust me you will feel alot better using a genuine windows xp,and microsoft wont be breathing down your neck
good luck

The correct answer is NO, as you really only need the Windows Genuine Advantage portion. That verifys your copy is now legit.

You could just do UPGRADE rather than reinstall

However if you reinstall XP in full, it will Format the HD and resolve that and any other issues with the None genuine software including Service Pack updates

It is illegal to sell self-built copies of computers using Windows Operating Systems. Although it is legal to build your own computer, but just for personal use and not be auctioned. It is also illegal to start your own business where you get paid to assemble a computer for someone else, it is against the law too. As long keep in mind, there is no law banning a person from assembling his own non-genuine copy of Windows XP only for personal use.

I think microsoft offer a tool that will replace the license key but I would suggest that it would be better to reinstall the whole thing. Just make sure you back everything up first
