SOS means neither "Save our ship" nor "Save our souls". It is a combination of dots and dashes in Morse Code (...---...) that is easy to remember and unambiguous. The supposed meanings were added much later. It is the international distress signal in Morse. For voice over the radio, the distress signal is Mayday. This, supposedly, comes from the French "m'aidez" but if it does it is bad French.

Save Our Ship, when your boat is in distress. Nickname for hamburger meat with milk gravy over bread called SOS for **** ON A Shingle. I am not joking either.

Save Our Ship. Chosen because it's the easiest Morse code to tap out in an emergency (... - - - ...)

It's used as both save our ship and save our souls...It's basically the universal abbreviation for help.

Save Our Ship. In morse code that'd be ...---... (dit dit dit daa daa daa dit dit dit) It's just a general "help!" code because its easily recognizable in morse code.
