Its supposed to protect the eyes from reflective glare from the sun, or the lights in night games. Not certain it actually works though , and I suspect some players now just wear it as a type of "war paint" ( I mean, come on ..who has EVER had trouble with light reflecting off their cheekbones???!)

It is to keep the reflections of the sun/floodlights out of their eyes. Sorry if you dont like that answer but its true.

They have helmets on, so they cant wipe the sweat off their faces as easily as you could in, say, baseball, and so sweat beading up on your cheeks can cause glare that makes it harder to keep your vision sharp, like when you step outside a movie theater into a bright afternoon, just not as bad.

Because black absorbs sunlight, the black eye paint is to prevent some of the glare from the sun.

John - you might not like the truth, but it is to help see the ball under floodlights - and it's not just NFL players that use them. Shiv Chanderpaul (West Indies) was the first cricketer, but they are now spreading through cricket. Baseball players also wear them.

Maybe before you start scoffing at the truth, you should try it for yourself and see how it works?!?!

I believe its war paint, possibly started by the Redskins, so yes its just to make them look tough.

I just don't buy the "stops light being reflected into my eyes", soccer, rugby, basketball players don't need it. The wearers are trying to look hard but in fact are just wearing make up!

Cricket players however wear white zinc on their faces not for decoration, but as sun block.

It cuts down on the glare from your cheeks. At least that was the original use of that paint. Now it can be used to intimidate the opponent, also.

The black on the face is used to deflect the sun away from the eyes. They do that so it's easier to see where the ball is heading...

Some use "paint" and some use a tape to help reduce glare from lights or sun....you'll see it in baseball too.
