Is it the lowest form of wit? I've never really understood why people say that.

If so, I think I might be the proverbial snakes belly. LOL

It may well be the lowest form of wit, but it sure is the funniest!

I get this remark a lot due to my penchant for sarcasm, but it's only ever said when the person can't think of something to say back. Usually most people respond to said sarcasm, and we then engage in what is commonly known as "banter".

:-)

wit 1 (wt)
n.
1. The natural ability to perceive and understand; intelligence.

2. a. Keenness and quickness of perception or discernment; ingenuity. Often used in the plural: living by one's wits.
b. wits Sound mental faculties; sanity: scared out of my wits.

3. a. The ability to perceive and express in an ingeniously humorous manner the relationship between seemingly incongruous or disparate things.
b. One noted for this ability, especially one skilled in repartee.
c. A person of exceptional intelligence.

There is no profit in degrading the one. Wise men know making an 'individual' the the butt of a joke does not taste sweet. One does so to mask one's own feelings of inadequacy before it can be revealed to the many. The many feel safe when they are as one.

The only people that say its the lowest form of wit are those who cant grasp sarcasm and feel left out by the people who do. They feel inferior and try to make them selves seem superior by trying to take the moral high ground.
They are also unoriginal, and can therefore only bandy well worn phrases back at you.

I love sarcasm, get off on it. a combo of anger, resentment and brings out my meanness...

For that reason I try hard to avoid it. I see my 'gift' for sarcasm as a character defect that is hurtful to myself as well as others.

they say it when they can't think of a witty and equally sarcastic comeback. wit, even in it's lowest form, is better then spouting annoying clichés like this. sarcasm is big and clever, keep at it.

Because it degenerates into the cheap shot. It's the sort of humour that makes fun of someone else instead of just finding the human condition in general amusing. Laughing at yourself is one thing, holding others up to ridicule is another.
