I am trying to set up a printer so that I can use it on my wireless Laptop.. I have a printer attached via a usb cable to a PC which is wired to a wireless modem (if that makes sense) now my question is.. do I have to have the Printer drivers installed on my laptop or will it use the drivers on the PC? many thanks

If the printer is installed on the PC, you can right click the printer in Printers and Faxes on the PC and select Sharing. it will allow you to set up the printer as a shared printer.

So long as your laptop can connect to the PC through wireless, ie you have file and print sharing setup (this can be done with the Network Setup Wizard), you will be able to browse to the PC by typing in its name, either in the run command (Start -> Run -> \\pcname) or through My Network Places. once you find it, you will be able to see the printer as a network share, simply double click and you will be able to print (drivers not required on laptop, only the PC sharing it).

Another way is to go into printers and faxes and select Add New Printer. You can then browse to the machine and add the printer. Again, you do not need to install the drivers, it will use the drivers on the PC.

This is how big companies deploy printing for many users. If you had to install the printer drivers on every machine, what would happen if the printer was replaced, or you wanted to change the settings? It would have to get done on every machine. By allowing printer sharing, one place can hold the drivers, the others machines simply send data to the printer.

Hope this helps.

Install the drivers on your laptop, using the CD or via the web. you should be able to find the the drivers for the laptop when you try to setup the printer network buts its easier if you already have it done.

If your really lazy like me + don't want to leave the desktop on just to print a sheet buy a wireless printer adaptor;

yes, you have to have the drivers on your laptop.
you also need to set it up on your PC to allow sharing of the printer and set up some form of network

you can probably get them from the manufacturers website
