using your key word available the Geo Metro comes in first along with its sibling the Suzuki Swift. The old bugs, as a previous answer indicated were close to the same weight (1600 ), but when fitted with an after market fiberglass body they could be slimmed down to 11-1200 pounds.
The Smart, 2 passenger car due out next year weighs in at 2100 due to all of the safety equipment built into it.

I can tell you that the Lotus Elise (1996 model, I think) weighed in at about 1600 lbs. I'm sure that the other models are close to that. It would be a heck of a lot more fun to drive than a Metro. :)

my boyfriend is a street racer and one of his first project cars was a 1991 crx hf(the hf is the most important car because it is the lightest type of crx) once he stripped the interior(which he does to all modified cars) i think he got the car's weight down to 1300lbs? no more than 1400lbs, but it was around that.if you are willing to spend a bit of money on your project, you can opt. for carbon fiber everything. doors, hood, trunk, side fenders,RIMS even!

I would say the geo metro would be about it. It's the smallest I can think of.
