IMO area of the priority is we've too many non-violent "criminals" in detention center, inclusive of marijuana consumers, dad and mom who do no longer pay or are in the back of on baby help, and so on. jointly as the rather risky criminals are nonetheless walking the streets. yet another subject is the appeals technique. It takes years and years to get by using all the appeals. My pal's son replaced into murdered fairly much a year in the past, and there remains no date set for a tribulation. each and every thing is held up with new hearings, looking a diverse region to hold the trial, and so on. The attorneys stall for time. some criminals take 10 years or longer just to get in the process the appeals. I additionally think of we've many mentally ill people locked up for terribly petty crimes. those people, and the final public, may be extra perfect served if there have been psychological institutes to assist those people. finally, i think of many different international places do no longer shop risky criminals in the device very long. They use the dying sentence rapidly and make room for a clean prisoner. I do have faith there are a number of circumstances the place the accused has many extra rights than the sufferers. Even after a individual is got here across responsible of a horrendous crime, they nonetheless seem to have extra rights. we are housing a great form of responsible prisoners which fee hundreds of hundreds of greenbacks each year.

Pretty confusing question ... and where did you get your statistics? Should we just assume they're accurate?

We have so much freedom in our country, that bad people try to take advantage of it, and some of these bad people go to jail. Lots of non-violent crimes need to be punished, too, duh.

When lots of the bad guys are in jail, crime rates outside of jail go down. The system works pretty good.

Cynical is no way to go through life, son.

aahh youth....

the government and states know there is BIG money in imprisonment. why do you think we have so many people in prison for a twenty year stretch on a "joint" possession?

sooner or later you will see that it is a big ol parasitic system that leaches off of society at a double cost TOO society.

how about those enormous state and federal taxes?...then SSI then bla bla bla....ok...so now you have your paycheck and you pay SALES tax....then taxes on your phone and utility bills....LET US NOT FORGET ABOUT PROPERTY TAXES!...or we may have to pay a penalty...lol

....anyways...so your coming home from city hall after paying for a garage sale permit (gotta sell everything you own to pay the taxes)....and you get pulled over and issued a ticket!!!.....OH NO!!!...EXPIRED LICENCE PLATES!!!...gotta pay that ticket on time or pay a penalty!

well....you know what happens next....

ALL YOUR FRICKIN' MONEY IS GONE...you can't afford to pay the ticket or get new tabs so Mr. policeman takes you to jail where you sit with the guy who got caught with a joint.

viva la hypocrisy!!!

You have to take a few things into account giving this ratio.

Are countries such as zibabwe and nigeria as good as tracking down criminals and such as well as trying them?

Doubtful. Most countries in Africa are run by gangs, mafias and religious cults.

Also, most countries execute rather than imprisoning, ala the middle east -- Hanus crimes such as being a Christian.

No. In fact, it's just the opposite.

I'm about to go on probation for possession of pot. Is that really worth spending money on when that money could go to fighting a real problem like terrorism?

There's much less violence in the US than in many countries. Eliminate those incarcerated for drug offenses and the percentage goes way down.
