We have so much freedom in our country, that bad people try to take advantage of it, and some of these bad people go to jail. Lots of non-violent crimes need to be punished, too, duh.
When lots of the bad guys are in jail, crime rates outside of jail go down. The system works pretty good.

aahh youth....
the government and states know there is BIG money in imprisonment. why do you think we have so many people in prison for a twenty year stretch on a "joint" possession?
sooner or later you will see that it is a big ol parasitic system that leaches off of society at a double cost TOO society.
how about those enormous state and federal taxes?...then SSI then bla bla bla....ok...so now you have your paycheck and you pay SALES tax....then taxes on your phone and utility bills....LET US NOT FORGET ABOUT PROPERTY TAXES!...or we may have to pay a penalty...lol
....anyways...so your coming home from city hall after paying for a garage sale permit (gotta sell everything you own to pay the taxes)....and you get pulled over and issued a ticket!!!.....OH NO!!!...EXPIRED LICENCE PLATES!!!...gotta pay that ticket on time or pay a penalty!
well....you know what happens next....
ALL YOUR FRICKIN' MONEY IS GONE...you can't afford to pay the ticket or get new tabs so Mr. policeman takes you to jail where you sit with the guy who got caught with a joint.

There's much less violence in the US than in many countries. Eliminate those incarcerated for drug offenses and the percentage goes way down.
