because we all feel more vulnerable in the dark and our imagination is more vivid if we can't see well, how do we know what might be hiding in the dark.

Most people forget exactly WHAT we are.

The Human Race are animals.
Okay, so we are sentient and intellectual but still animals.
Way back in our history of development we had finely honed senses of self preservation. That way, the leopard that was creeping up on us in our caves, would find we were ready for it with a big stick and a whack on the nose.
These senses were the most important thing about us at the time, as they kept us alive.
Over time, these were not used as much BUT occasionally they jump to the fore, over-riding our intellect and giving us the 'fight or flight' response.
These are now instincts which although rarely used are still capable of saving us from the leopard!

As for common sense and logic, common sense and logic says - stay out of abandoned spooky buildings in the dark!

It's the old primeval senses coming to the fore. We are not built to operate in the dark and if you wandered out of your cave and into the forest at night you would probably be attacked or eaten by something. So even now the old senses kick in and the heckles rise if we are spooked in the dark.
