why do people turn their cars into luggage?

the ones with the suitcase straps on the trunk, that is the most ugliest aftermarket add on i can imagine, it looks like a suitcase!

Possibly for the transport of items that would otherwise be illegal or ill-advised to have inside of the car-?

Open liquor bottles,....LPG containers.....?
