I mean someone who is calling you vile names and yelling. What can you say to make them stop and make them think of themselves as a real jerk for going off in the first place? Any smart comebacks or effective words?

This is my abusicve ex-husband. We have children together, so I have to talk to him sometimes. Every single time I'm on the phone with him he starts screaming obscenities and yelling about me being a *****, etc..

Obviously, this is distressing and hurtful as I try to be really fair and nice - Just an indication of how our whole long marriage was. I usually hang up, but this makes him even more nasty the next time.

Really meaning this, you say:

"The Lord bless and keep you; The Lord make His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you; the Lord life up His countenance upon you, and give you peace." Numbers 6:24-26

No one in the face of being blessed like this will continue to verbally attack you and may even be surprised that you cared enough for their welfare to ask the Lord to bless them. This goes along with what Jesus said when He told His disciples to pray for those who persecuted them and despitefully used them. It is all part of loving your neighbor as yourself. If everyone in the world practiced this, there would be no warfare.

It's hard to make some who is being a jerk to actually realize that they are.

However, you don't ever have to listen to verbal abuse Just tell the person that "I can't be with you when your yell and call me names, I get too ____________ (fill in the blank with how it makes you feel) Don't tell them that they make you __________, just that you get that way when they yell and call you names.

Name calling is very unhealthy, you know that right?

Lead by example, don't participate. If you aren't joining in he/she will have a clear view of their own words and behavior! It won't stop it in the moment but later they will think about it.

Niceness kills, remember that one too.

When he goes off, ask him in a very calm voice "Do you need a hug?" This comment will probably piss him off more and he will hang up.
