Do cannibals really eat the human beings, if yes why do they?

Yes. That is the meaning of the word cannibalism. It's done for mainly religious reason by tribal people. I don't know the exact reason.

Survivors in lifeboats were also known to eat the dead, to survive. sometimes the would draw lots to see who would be killed; this was not illegal in the 19th century in most countries.

yep..thats why they call em cannibals..they do it for different reasons all over the world although christianity is stomping them out (with the missionaries and stuff)..some eat their dead as a sign of respect(they only eat you if they love you)..others only eat enimies killed in battle..and others only eat ones killed believed to be evil beings to get rid of them and their evil..some also believe in absorbing power from eating,or just parts like brain and liver and heart....mmmm mmmmm good....
