The world Football or 'soccer' player of the year is generally donated as THE best foortball.

Currently Fabio Cannavaro is the greatest footballer on the planet, but I suspect this is due to the recent world cup win by Italy... What a poor world cup that was!

This is a list of the best players in the world as chosen by FIFA for the last 25 years:

2006 - Fabio Cannavaro
2005 - Ronaldinho
2004 - Ronaldinho
2003 - Pavel Nedved
2002 - Ronaldo
2001 - Michael Owen
2000 - Luís Figo
1999 - Rivaldo
1998 - Zinedine Zidane
1997 - Ronaldo
1996 - Ronaldo
1995 - Gianluca Vialli
1994 - Paolo Maldini
1993 - Roberto Baggio
1992 - Marco Van Basten
1991 - Lothar Matthäus
1990 - Lothar Matthäus
1989 - Ruud Gullit
1988 - Marco Van Basten
1987 - Ruud Gullit
1986 - Diego Maradonna
1985 - Michel Platini
1984 - Michel Platini
1983 - Zico
1982 - Paolo Rossi

In popular terms, the best EVER player is usually boiled down to an argument between 4 or 5 people... being

Pele of Brasil
Diego Marradonna of Argentina
Zinedine Zidane of Brasil
Franz Beckenbauer of Germany

Of course this argument will never end, and no one player can ever really top that list.

as far as people that are still playing

QB- Peyton Manning-he has had the most consistency in the QB position out of all the active players, his numbers are incredible, his desire to win is ecstatic, and his knowledge of the game is uncomparable.

HB-LaDanian Tomlinson-he scores TD's and in today's game that is the most important thing for an NFL back. Don't forget that he is the rushing leader this year.

FB-Lorenzo Neal-have to put this guy here due to the fact he is a main blocker for LT, without him there is no single season touchdown record.

WR-Marvin Harrison-no doubt about it, he catches passes, scores TD's, and makes plays. Plus, it helps having the best QB in the league throw you the ball.

OL-Larry Allen-this guy is massive, named to several Pro Bowls, and has even made a huge impact on the 49ers offensive line. See what Frank Gore did with him.

TE-Jeremy Shockey-leads his team in receptions, fights to the end, gets his team going, and will even play hard without a helmet. This guy is a football player.

DE-Jason Taylor-this guy knows how to make plays when needed, for his size he dominates lineman, makes sacks, and can score points

DL-Richard Seymour-he plugs up gaps and gets going 100% at all times. He is a force to be reckoned with and has greatly helped the Patriots this season.

LB-Brian Urlacher-the most consistent linebacker you'll find right now. No off the field problems and very few, if any, injuries to slow his seasons down. Leads his defense week in and week out.

CB-Champ Bailey-this guy is incredible, he can cover almost anybody, and if his stats decrease its due to QB's being scared to throw his way and RB's scared to run his way.

S-Brian Dawkins, Ed Reed-tough to single one of these guys out as they are great run stoppers, superb coverage backs and have the abilities to creat plays when needed. They bring their defense to a whole new level

K-Adam Vinatieri-Mr. Clutch is a guy you want on your team. He makes the field goals when they are needed. He can withstand pressure and has the ability to win games.

P-Jeff Feagles-he knows what punting is all about. Downing the opposing team inside the 20. He does not care about his net average or anything of the sort. He plays the battle of field position to the fullest.

KR/PR-Devin Hester-this kid knows how to return kicks, lets just hope he is hot next year.
