And...

Some names have a very strong, cultural connotation. For instance, we generally associate the name Barbie with someone superficial and materialistic. Or, a Bubba might be really stupid. Does Lex carry such an obvious connotation?

(Keywords: *obvious connotation*, folks! Not like "I knew a girl once named Lex who was a real slut. I'm looking for obvious, cultural connotations, not personal feelings.)

Thanks

P.S. No offense to those people named Barbie or Bubba. Come to think of it, I knew a really nice lady once named Barbie!

The only obvious connotation this name has is of course the Superman relation.. but then in the real world, is that this is assumed to be a girls' name. I would not use it on a boy. Lex is very nicknamish in itself, and people automatically think it's a nickname for Alexis or Alexa. Especially since there aren't many men/boys who go by Lex or have a name that can be shortened to Lex. One other thing to consider is that the name Alexis has been a very popular name in the past decade for new babies. I believe it's in the top 20. These girls will be likely nicknamed Lex and Lexi. So, if you really love Lex for a boy, I would strongly suggest using Alex. Then you can still call him Lex, but he will also have a definitive masculine name .

Yes, it can be either. You could name a girl Alexis and a boy Alexander and Lex could be a nickname, but just Lex would be a great name too. I don't think there is an obvious connotation for the name. The only person I ever think of is Lex Luther from Superman.

Lex can be a boy's name or a girl's name (short for Lexie or Alexis). I don't recall any obvious connotations related to the name. The only thing I think of is Lex Luther from Superman. *shrug* Hope that helped!

Lex can be either masculine or feminine. I don't think it has any connotations one way or the other. I like it better as a nick name for a longer name. It gives your child more options.

I have a friend who has at various times in her life been Kathy, Katie, Kate, and now Katherine. It's nice if your name can 'grow' along with you.

Lex - I automatically associate the name with the Superman movie and Lex Luther the evil villain.

Also, Lex rhymes with sex. Sorry, it's crude I know, but also obvious.

I would not associate Lex with being a girls name, but maybe Lexi, being short for Alexandra.

I say go for it. I can not really think of any negative connotations that go with Lex. I actually like the name a lot. It is creative, but also reminds me a bit of Alexander or Alexandra.

The name is sophisticated and can be used as a boy and a girl name

Lex for a boy like Lex Luther, sounds good to me my son's name is Kal-el after superman. As for a girl I like Lexi better you know short for Alexis. In our society today Lex as a name fits perfectly whether for a boy or girl.
