i really dont know. but i will say i am guilty of them. i suppose because its real? funny how people still watch them even though its scripted. i would assume that america is dramatic and they they love drama.

There have alwasy been a few reality-type shows, (think "Candid Camera" going way back). But after "Survivor" was such a hit they started flooding the air with reality shows.
The networks pump out these shows because they are extremely cheap to produce so even a mediocre rating will make a profit.
IThere are so many of them that some are bound to be entertaining while most are really bad.

Originally, because they were something new. But after"13 seasons" (or 6 years) they do get a bit redundant....
But I still watch - my husband and I make a game out of it - who is going to win the challenge, or who is getting kicked off.
If they weren't shown again, I don't think I'd lose any sleep over it. If is almost watching them out of habit.
I do agree that production companies / studios have turned to them too often as "easy" money. Low production costs (comparitivly) and fewer hassles than long term sit coms / dramas.
Same thing is happening with the rash of game shows.

Reality shows are SO 2000...not so much anymore.
Why? Because American tv writers friggen suck and have churned out nothing but crap the last couple of years.

Dont worry, it happens in england too.
we have all these programs as well, and We are just starting to realise that we need to pull away from this dumbing down.
The BBC allmost lost the right to charge us for a tv licence(everybody pays if they have tv) because they were putting som much cr@p on tv.
I guess theres tone of reasons.
But even more reasons to get rid of them.

Beats me. I like a few of them, but some are just retarded. America's Got Talent was probably the worst thing I've ever seen put on TV in my life.

For me, it's the psychological aspect as opposed to the soaps. The soaps have terrible writing and situations. The reality shows show people as they really are, under stress.

They DON'T. The broadcast companies(read TV stations/studios) love them because they are far cheaper to make.
