There are studies that show this is true. I also suffer from a lack of sleep and have weight issues, I went to a naturalistic doctor and they told me to take a product called Happy Sense, it works...found at any health food store. I think it is the HTP in it that helps with sleep.

More than one question there, but as to your main one, there have been recent studies that suggest a link between poor sleep and weight gain. Probably has something to do with an imbalance between serotonin and cortisol levels.
Don't know your age, but if you are around 40 or higher, you might want to try Melatonin. Our melatonin levels tend to drop after age 40. You could give it a try if you are younger, but it is not as likely to help you. No harm in trying though.
I have used ear plugs for many years, but if you can't, have you considered a white noise machine or a fan running in your room?

Check out topics on the web in the area of sleep hygiene. Yes, there's such info out there. If you're really having trouble sleeping, perhaps you could check out a sleep clinic, as referred to by your doctor. Perhaps you're suffering from sleep apnea and don't even realize it. At the clinic you'll be connected to electrodes while you sleep, and you may have to stay for a night or even 2. Check with your doctor about some safe medications to help you sleep. These work better than over-the-counter meds.

the answer is yes.
Adult should have 7-8 hours of sleep per day. Since you not sleeping enough your body is thinking that you are in the stress and tries to store any energy possible. This slowes down your metabolism. Hence any amount of food you intake gets stored as fat.

If you are too fatigued from lack of sleep, it is hard to exercise to burn calories. Thus, indirectly, lack of sleep does cause weight increase.

No, insomnia does not cause weight gain. Eating too much and no exercise causes weight gain.
Can't blame your weight gain on not sleeping.
