Here is my take. I think the Democrats gaining control of the Senate and the House is an indication that the country is fed up with the war. That being said, if the situation doesn't improve, I see more the same in 2008. Like it or not, the Republicans fate is connected to the resolution of the situation in Iraq.

You are very much on time, thats what the people are saying, and while the democrats only control the senate by one vote, not that many senate seats were up, and George Bush has been and will be a kiss of death to the party of big business!

Much of what you say is probably true, but the Democrats' performance in this last election is pretty pitiful considering the political climate. They have a paper-thin majority in both houses, which makes Nancy Pelosi's 100 hour promises seem ridiculous.

It's my belief that people very rarely shift their political persuasion. Democrats will always be Democrats, Republicans will always be Republicans, Independents will always be primarily liberals who want to lend credence to their views by sounding objective, and there will always be a large pool of undecided voters, who are really people who don't know enough about anything to make an intelligent decision and wouldn't know a bad idea if it kicked them in the groin, and usually end up voting for Democrats because they make the most ridiculous, unrealistic promises (such as free health care for everyone), designed to hoodwink just such people.

The fourth group makes up a significant part of the population, which is why the balance of power shifts back and forth regularly in irrational response to mostly unrelated or misinterpreted data (much like the stock market, coincidentally) but never resulting in much more than a nominal majority for either side.

Depends on what the democrats do in 2 years. If they satisfy the public, then they will do well in 2008, but if not, then they will be kicked out of power and republicans can take over again.

Sign of something that just happened. Remember the Republicans won big in 1994 but Clinton was reelected 2 years later. Nothing is permanent in US politics.
