I just moved to NY and want to get residency. I opened up a new bank account at a local branch, but what is the next step?

There are two kinds of establishing residency.

For the first, you get a home (rent or buy), get a drivers license or non-drivers I.D., and establish utilities. Generally speaking, as soon as you do these things, you are considered a resident of that state.

HOWEVER ... for the second kind of residency ... that to qualify for in-state tuition at colleges and universities, you have to live in the state for an entire year (365 days) before the term starts, and be able to prove it with receipts, etc. If you are under 21 and already a non-resident student, different rules apply ... it takes longer to qualify as a resident then.

I'll assume you are an American Citizen? If so the only thing you need to do is have a job that taxes you in NY tax status. After that make sure you get a valid NY drivers license and then register to vote at your local county as a New York resident. That's about all I can think of. If you are not an American citizen, well then we have a lot more to discuss.

If you are an American citizen and have a car change your license tags to New York and your drivers license also. You might want to make sure you have put in a change of address to make sure your mail comes to the New York address. That will prove residency with a utility bill.

Step 1: move there.
In America, that's the only step.

you in simple terms want a bill that has your call on it and that handle on it. (needless to say you does not have a application bill so a cellular telephone bill or credit card bill could artwork in simple terms fantastic)
