It's easy to confuse the two because they are both David E. Kelley shows (so was Ally McBeal), but Boston Public was the show about teachers. Boston Legal is a spin-off of The Practice and both shows are about lawyers.

James Spader (Alan Shore) joined the last season of The Practice. His character was so popular, they made the spinoff "Boston Legal" right after The Practice ended.

The Practice was before. Boston started the season after Practice ended.

The Practice started in 1997 and ended in 2004. It immediately spun-off into Boston Legal.

Boston Public started in 2000 and ended in 2004. Though it was also created by David E. Kelley, it isn't inherently connected to the other shows.
