My 99 Pontiac Montana has a weird transmission problem. This happens intermittently only when warmed up. The vehicle will start to have harsh upshifts in all gears and their is a 'whining' noise when this happens. If I stop the car and shut it off this goes away and comes back another time. Anyone got an idea.....93K on the van

Join the club you have the worst built minivan ever.... maybe second worst to a Ford Windstar. Next time you want a minivan go Chrysler/Dodge or even Kia/Hyundai. Better made, better warranty, better cars.

This transmission is computer controlled and if it detects a fault it will put it in failsafe mode which in turn gives it maximum line pressure that causes hard shifts. Every time you turn of the vehicle it resets the computer. Flushing or changing the fluid will not fix the problem it may make it worse. This vehicle needs to be properly diagnosed by a professional technician.
P.S. The person saying the bands are slipping obviously has know idea how that transmission works he is way off base.

Your auto needs servicing, sounds like you have a blocked filter screen or partially blocked, i would take it in and get them to put a service kit in it and give it a flush, they should also check the bands and adjust were necessary, if it has been doing it for some time you may have damaged the bands, hence the noise, usually the next stage is the trans gives the affect of slipping.
check your fluid , it should be red and transparent if it is not clear or has a blackish tinge to it get it done straight away as the bands are slipping and this will damage your trans,
