Despite what some people have pointed out, there are a lot of things that indicate there might have been life and that life might be able to exist again.
In fact, it is believed through the process of terraforming, human life could be introduced within only 50 years!
The reason scientists believe life is possible on Mars stems from a layer of ice believed to be beneath the surface. It's true, we have no exact proof that there is ice, and therefore could be water, but there are indicators.
For instance, there are clear hexagon shapes covering the entire surface of mars. These same shapes are found all over the surface of the land in many places on earth where there used to be water, but now there is only ice below the surface. (They are created by ice melting, raising in depth, and refreezing, causing the cracking of the earth.)

Several years ago a meteorite that was proven to have come from an ancient impact on Mars was found to have what looked like a fossilized form of very crude life. Most scientists have disputed this, but a few still persist that the meteorite does actually contain signs of martian life.
Also, most astronomers now agree that Mars still has some occasional flows of water on its surface, and water is one of the requirements for carbon-based life forms (..like us..) The theory is that crude forms of life might still thrive beneath the martian surface where this water comes from.

Last I heard, there was a report that a UFO was sighted leaving Mars, headed for earth and it was believed to contain subjects being exported from Mars because they didn't know how to use spell check.

Nothing. The whoopla was about a conjecture in a paper written by one man who said that there might be life there based on hydrogen peroxide.
