I am also wondering if I can do it how much slower will it be in comparison with a USB2 port.

yes, it will just be slower. It's hard to say how much slower because USB2.0 devices don't all operate at top speed, some operate as low as only twice faster than the max USB1.1 speed.

The max USB1.1 speed is 1.5MB/s although you might not really get that, because your laptop or the hard drive could be slower. a 1GB drive would take 12 minutes to copy at that speed.

Yes, you can use an external hard drive with USB 1.1 ports. However, it will be much slower. You might be better off to purchase a USB 2.0 PCMIA card so that you can use the drive at full speed.

USB 1 will be a lot slower than usb 2. In theory, usb 1 is around 12 Mbps, usb 480 Mbps...around 30-40 times slower.

yes, you can, yes 1.1 is slower than USB 2

you can "ghost" the entire hard drive over as a back -up
