That's funny that you ask that, because once I yelled "knickers" at a friend of mine in the Wal-Mart parking lot, and I saw a black family, and then kept repeating the word with a very pronounced "CK" so that they knew I wasn't saying.. you know.. the "N" word..

LOL.... I doubt that its just blacks, but okay.
I know what knickers are. But, most people in the US, or at least most blacks do not. We (meaning Americans) do not say knickers. So, thats probably why they look at you like that. They have no idea what you're talking about.

here is a list on wikipedia of words which have different meanings to british and americans. its way too long but it just shows that its not just knickers ..... there a whole list of things u cant say in the US or else u get laughed at !!

On behalf of my English husband (who now has me using the word) nope. No one has ever given us a strange look. We get looks for other slang words - and my husband still gets a bit smirky when someone over here says 'fanny'.
