There are several books on this at the library, which you should consult before buying any materials. However, the room needs to be soundproof - this isn't just to keep the neighbors happy, but it reduces "microphone bleed" when recording.
Sound will bounce much better off of flat, parallel surfaces. If you have drapes or foam on the walls, that will give you better sound. Don't try the egg crate thing. Do you know how many eggs you would need to eat to cover the walls with this stuff? It's a lot and it's very flimsy.
This is why theaters have tapestry curtains and the walls are carpeted. The acoustic ceilings also deaden the sound so you don't have reverb.
You also need to plan your workspace. You can't have the recording equipment right there in the same room because you won't really be able to hear the quality of the recording. You need to have that separated and good monitors in the room as well.

much of what you can do depends on what you have to start with. and what you are looking to get back.
essentially, there are three kinds of surfaces, reflective, resonant, and absorbent. where you use what kind of surface can change the sound greatly. if you want nothing but what the instruments or voices make, you want absorbent. a "concert hall" sound requires more of the resonant materials.
reflective is like in a tile bathroom or shower, it enhances the sound, sometimes, if the space is available, you can make free standing panels that are say foam and carpet on one side, and a hard reflective material on the other, which side you put towards the source and where, can change the sound.
like the other answer said, you do need a booth of some kind for the recording and more importantly the playback.
to do it right, you are talking alot of wiring. mics, speakers, headphone jacks, power supplies. tons of things. if you wish to discuss it further, email me at tootall1121@yahoo.com
