Charlotte, NC. If you like greek, the is the Greek Isle. They have the flaming cheese and ouzo. Although if you drink you may just want to get a hotel room for the night. Which could add to the birthday present as well, and there are several hotels really close to the resturant in the uptown area. For dessert try chocolate covered strawberries and champagne. This would be a really nice overnight trip away from home. If you prefer to stay closer to home, japanese steak houses are always fun and they usually do a little birthday thing at the end of the meal. You could also try Biltmore Estates. Although I have not had the pleasure I have heard that it is awesome there and very romantic. You could also travel north and head into West Virginia to go to a ski lodge and have a dinner in front of a cozy fire place. Good Luck and Happy Birthday

You could travel to Savannah, GA and visit the restaurant owned by Paula Deen from the Food Channel. It's a beautiful city and just a few hours from Raleigh -- head south on I-95. In North Carolina I like the Chop House, Capitol Grille, and The Melting Pot.

Blowing Rock, NC - it is the cutest little town about 2.5 hours northwest of Raleigh (near Boone). They have adorable shoppes and great restaurants. There are several bars/pubs. The nicest hotel in town is Chetola (www.chetola.com). I love this place - it's GREAT for couples!
Second Empire Restaurant in downtown Raleigh is the BEST restaurant in town if you don't make it out of town.

This isn't JUST in North Carolina, but when I lived there, it was the first time I ate at an Ichiban steak house. If you have never done tepenyaki (I'm sure I spelled that wrong), it is alot of fun! You sit at a table that has a grill right inside it. The chef cooks the food in front of you, while doing all kinds of crazy tricks with his big knives, sauces, throwing shrimps around, etc.
It is really one of the funnest dinner experiences I have had!
Happy birthday to you honey!!

If you like to travel, think about Charleston, SC. Among the fantastic restaraunts there are Hyman's if you like seafood. A lot of famous people dine there and there are placemarkers on the tables where they have dined. The atmosphere in the city is great.
