I write songs. I would like to know how I could copyright them and where to do it at, so that nobody can steal my music and use it as their own! Also, where and how can I sell my songs at? Thanks!

The easiest way for a person breaking into the music industry to get a copyright is to do what is known as a "poor man's copyright." Burn a CD of your music and seal it along with any notes or lyrics in an envelope and mail it to yourself. Do not open it! If there is ever a case where someone is trying to steal your idea, the "poor man's copyright" provides a time-stamp as to when the song was written and will hold up in court.

It is a doubly good idea to do a poor man's copyright if you are shopping your music around to be published. It is not uncommon for unscrupulous publishers to steal music from authors. If you have a poor man's copyright you have proof of ownership.

You can do this at the US Copyright Office – see the last 3 links in the source box. The application is fairly simple & the cost is $45 per application.

Despite what others state, a "poor man's" copyright is NOT the same as registering it. Here's what the US Copyright Office has to say:

"The practice of sending a copy of your own work to yourself is sometimes called a 'poor man’s copyright.' There is no provision in the copyright law regarding any such type of protection, and it is not a substitute for registration."

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

you can do a poor mans copy by mailing your lyrics to your using a certified mail. And as for selling your songs ypu can use a book called THE SONG WRITTERS MARKET. It has different tips on how you can do that what and who you have to contact in order to make it work. Basically it can work you through the whole process.

If you "SELL" your songs/lyrics you are not entitled to any royalties OR rights. That is why they BUY the rights.
