Every major medical and mental health organization (including the American Psychiatric Association, the American Psychological Association, the American Medical Association, and the American Academy of Pediatrics) has affirmed that homosexuality is not a mental disease or disorder, and therefore cannot be cured.
Most researchers of human biology and sexuality agree that homosexuality is a natural variation of the human sexual response. Evidence suggests a substantial biological component. For example, one study found that the concordance rate among identical twins raised in separate environments is 66%. (A finding of 60% is usually taken to indicate a genetic influence.)
While there are therapists on the fringe, and religious counseling programs, who assert that homosexuality can be changed, there is no evidence that they can deliver on their promises. The sad individuals who enter into these programs typically continue to struggle with their homosexual drives for the rest of their lives, while forcing themselves to find and marry a woman and trying to convince themselves how happy and fulfilled they are. (Right... which is why they have to sneak away from home to get their kicks, or think about someone else in order to get it up for the wife.)
Probably the ideal therapy for a homosexual person having identity issues is what is called "gay-affirmative psychotherapy," though any good clinician who is competent and sensitive with regard to the unique issues faced by homosexuals in our society should be able to help a gay or lesbian client to achieve a better sense of self-acceptance without him or her having to become someone they are not.

Most therapy these days is to help people accept that they are homosexual, not to talk them out of it. It isn't a problem to be "fixed" in the way that paranoia or obsessive-compulsive disorder is. It doesn't interfere with everyday life or being happy and successful.
People can be conditioned (or brainwashed) into believing that they're no longer gay, but the orientation remains under the surface. To what extent they are happy that way and how long they stay that way, only they can say.
Click on the "+" button and explain why you want to know. Are we talking hypothetical, about you, about a friend? With more details, you'll get a better answer (this forum is used to the question, but coming from a dozen different directions and with a dozen different motives).

in accordance to a psych professor, the reason why it isn't listed as a psychological ailment is because no one is of the same opinion with precisely what homosexuality is. If 2 boys are wrestling and one receives a not hassle-free on, is that gay? Or is it provided that there is an allure to similar sex. Does that advise if someone sees a shemale and receives grew to grow to be on yet no longer from conventional adult men, is that gay? Or is it provided that they have got sex with someone of an identical sex. Does that advise someone who become inebriated on nighttime and had gay sex yet by no ability lower back did it, is that a gay? the position precisely is the line? in case you are able to't agree on the position the line is, then how are you going to assert it really is a ailment? and for this reason homosexuality isn't listed as a psychological ailment by way of the APA EDIT @ Slippery even as moist, thanks for the apple minutiae. somewhat off topic, yet exciting minutiae all an identical.

Homosexuality isn't something that can be dealt with by therapy...it's a genetic thing. You can no more help being homosexual than you can help having blue eyes. It isn't a choice that people make or a problem that they have, it's how they were born.

Wow you are going to get a lot of people in trouble here...Im really not sure to tell the truth and I doubt that anyone really knows...Im sure if a homosexual wanted help for the problem that therpy is available...I am not gay basher, but I do believe it is an unnatural place to be,some people that are gay accept it and some do not...I do know that gays run alot in certain familes...If one is in the family usually there is another or a few more in the same family..As a spiritual view it is considered (sinful) so I suppose it would be a unnatural act so in that sense yes it would be a psycholocial problem....

Homosexuality was removed from the DSM back in the early 70's.It is not a mental health issue.Therapy might be beneficial for a person who is gay, to help them deal with the stress of putting up with narrow minded, bigoted fools.

Homosexuality is a psychological problem only for those who are obsessed about it, such as "religious" leaders.

It's not a problem. But there are people so self-righteous that they think they can "cure the world of the sickness of homosexuality".
